How to choose a broadband package for online gaming

Online gaming is popular and with the advent of multi-player games over the Internet on PS3's and Xbox 360's more devices are getting online and joining the massively-multiplayer gaming world - it's no longer just PC users.

When it comes to online gaming - whatever your console of choice - it is crucial for gamers to have the fastest broadband connection possible and it can really become a matter of life or death (virtually speaking, of course).

A fraction of a second delay in downloading can completely alter the course of your fortunes.

There are a few basic points to bear in mind when you compare broadband deals for gaming.

Speed

The fastest connection possible is of paramount importance if you want to keep up with new gaming technologies.

Your Mbps (mega bits per second) broadband speeds should be as high as possible. Super-fast uploading and downloading times will help create low latency, which generates swift and even game-play.

For packages with low latency look for those claiming a low ping rate. Ping rate is the amount of time it takes for 1 tiny bit of data to be sent out - hit where it's addressed to and then get back again.

Before signing up for any super-fast packages, first check with the provider whether the cables in your area will be suitable for receiving such high speeds and also that you live close enough to the exchange.

Often broadband providers will now tell you the maximum speed they expect your telephone line can receive.

If you live in a cable area, because of how fiber optic technology works, it doesn't matter how far away from the exchange you live - and you'll usually always be able to get their fastest speeds - as long as you're willing to pay that much of course.

Another important point to remember is download - or usage - limits.

Whilst it may sound a bit incongruous, it is often preferable not to choose an unlimited download package as these generally have fair-use policies which curb (or throttle) the speed of massive downloading.

This may well affect you as an enthusiastic gamer and you certainly wouldn't want to have to put up with that while some cocky kid from Korea frags your keister.

However, there are always a few exceptions to the rule. Some of the best broadband providers for online gaming offer unlimited packages.

Be broadband is great for gaming and they offer unlimited download limits with a very lenient fair use policy.

Plusnet broadband has also recently introduced a truly unlimited package, which utilises application specific traffic management - or speed throttling, this means usage such as gaming or VoIP are given priority on their network keeping gaming as fast as possible.

Plusnet is also completely unlimited between midnight and 8am, which is the perfect time to get into a serious late night gaming sesh.

Compatibility

Lastly, be sure that your console is totally compatible with the new modem you will receive.

This is particularly important if you choose a broadband package not exclusively designed for gamers.

Also remember to compare broadband deals thoroughly to make sure you're getting the best gaming broadband for the best price.
