3 Tips To Beating Ebay's Competitors...and Make More Money
Whether you are new or been with eBay for a while, the results these three simple tips can make to your income is endless. The fact that eBay has well over 80 million users puts you at a huge advantage over that internet marketer trying to get traffic that BUYS to their site, especially if you know what to do. Here are three intelligent ways to exploit that traffic.
1. Listings with bids get over 1,000% more clicks!
That tip is meaningless to the person who doesn't know what to do to capitalize on it. But, since you decided to read my article, I will tell you how to bump up your click through rate by that ridiculous percentage rate. The more views/hits you get, the more chances your selling price will increase, and better yet, the more marketing opportunities you have. And folks, that is targeted buying traffic! So, let's increase that click through rate (CTR).
In order to get more clicks, we need people to bid on your item fast since this is the key to getting a high CTR. The first thing you must do is basic economics. If you want attention fast, list something in demand. To see if your item is in demand, see if it sold well recently. See tip #3 on how to find out if something sold well.
Now comes the secret that every one is afraid to use because of eBay's policy on shill bidding (so keep it on the down low). I just got the OK from eBay that this was legal, as of 4/13/10 (you may want to verify if you are reading this at a reasonably later date).
Let's say you chose to sell some popular video game, just as a random example. What you do is put at the top of your description a notice that informs them that the first 3 (or 5 or ?) bidders will receive a "thanks for participating" bonus via email whether they win or lose the auction. Make this bonus relevant to your item. Create a bonus that you would love to have if you were a buyer of your item. It can be a simple link to a video (or a couple of videos) that reveals secrets on "How To Obliterate Your Opponent..." in your specific video game, or something to that effect.
The whole point is to give them a reason to bid EARLY so that when others see your listing on the search results page, they get curious about your auction and click through too.
2. Your Title is THE Most Valuable Space You Have
You will NEVER make money if no one sees what you have to sell, period! And the fact is that majority of users search only titles (estimates in the 80%-90% range), not descriptions. So, it is vital that you have as many keywords in your title.
Take this example: "Up For Sale - **New** and Beautifully Kept Nintendo Wii Console - Smoke Free House."
You see all the fluff and unnecessary words? "Up For Sale" is totally unnecessary since you are obviously listing it for sale. No one searches for asterisk (**). So, though you may think it draws attention, it lowers your chances of being found. "and Beautifully Kept" is fluff words that people never search for, and "Smoke Free House," in my opinion, is not relevant when it comes to electronics (it is relevant, however, with clothes or other garments that retain the smell of cigarettes).
All those unnecessary words could be replaced with VALUABLE keywords, and thus greatly increasing your ad to show up in listings.
Also, abbreviate non-keywords as much as possible so you can add in that one extra keyword.
Here's a free keyword tool you can use if you are lost for keywords to use in your title (read instructions first): http://labs.ebay.com/erl/demoto/to?
3. Use A Higher Starting Price Rather Than A Low Starting Price With A Reserve
In almost all cases, a higher starting price will out perform an auction with a lower starting price listed with a reserve. This could be because buyers don't want to waste their time bidding on something without knowing where they stand. Another much more valuable reason is because more buyers sort their search results by "Price + Shipping: highest first" vs "Price + Shipping: lowest first." This gives your listing an immediate boost in the search results page, thus more views.
Likewise, if you know your buyer is purchasing something time sensitive, then this same principle can be applied by setting your auction as a 1 or 3 day listing (since they will be sorting the search results by "Time: ending soonest."
This is where knowing your market gives you a huge advantage over your competition.
Log into your eBay account and click the "advanced search" at the top of any page. Type in the keyword(s) of the item you are going to list. Click the little box next to "Completed Listing" and click "Search." Look for the item you are going to sell and see if there are green dollar values next to it (these are the ones that actually sold - ignore all the red values). Now find the lowest (green) dollar value that item sold for and start your listing somewhere below that price (assuming the item was in similar condition as yours). You want to make it high enough so it gets listed near the top when the buyer sorts from "high to low," yet low enough that the buyer feels like he/she is getting a bargain, thus, placing a bid.
This should give your listing more exposure, and thus a higher selling price, assuming your created an effective and attractive listing title.
A quick recap on how you can increase your income quickly by implementing 3 easy tips:
1. Give buyers a reason to bid early.
2. Use as many Keywords (not fluff) in your title as possible.
3. Do not use a secret reserve. Start auction at higher price.
These simple tips alone will give you much more exposure than your old ways, offering you many opportunities to sell to a targeted audience. That is valuable!
These traffic boosters are just the beginning in improving your business. A system that focuses on making multiple sales rather than a single sale is the key to taking your eBay income to the next level. Luckily, the learning curve on how to leverage eBay's traffic has been greatly reduced, thanks to the efforts of veteran eBayer's that have developed duplicable systems.
